DevOps Engineer Solar Industry

Dylan
Summerville

I've done door-to-door sales, admin, and DevOps. Now I build the systems the company runs on.

Self-taught in 2025, I automated my own admin role out of existence – then built the Job Adding System: 55 automations across 15 platforms, doing the work of two and a half to four people. I run it, and the Azure estate under it, end to end as code.

About

Sales floor to server room

I started in door-to-door solar sales, moved into operations and administration, and in 2025 taught myself to code. Within months I'd automated my own admin role out of existence – and kept going until the whole back office ran on the system I'd built.

Today I'm the company's DevOps engineer, owning its Azure estate end to end: provisioned as code with Terraform and Bicep, shipped through GitHub Actions, and secured zero-trust from the endpoint to the Cloudflare edge. The Job Adding System is documented to the point that a third-party team can be trained from it: a catalog with a flowchart per automation, a developer guide and a two-hour recorded walkthrough.

Alongside the products I run the group's cloud foundation, and I'm completing a Graduate Certificate in Computing at Charles Sturt University (cybersecurity & system design, High Distinction average) – the pathway to an IT Master's.

Internal tool

RenewCompare

Energy-analysis tool for the sales team

Reads a customer's actual bills and shows, in plain dollars, which plan wins – including time-of-use, demand and battery-backed plans most comparators can't model. Built to product standard, it now runs as an internal tool rather than a public service.

  • Multi-service FastAPI backend with VNet-private Postgres on Azure Container Apps
  • AI bill parsing and hardened first-party auth – Argon2id with rotating refresh tokens
  • Half-hourly quantile price forecasts trained on 27 years of AEMO settlement data
  • A Rust optimiser that schedules home batteries in under a millisecond
FastAPI • PostgreSQL • Rust • React Native • Cloudflare

JMS web console

The staff face of the Job Adding System

Job 360 for any job across every system, a Data health page for the mirror, on-demand reports, live actions behind a confirm, a job editor with an audit trail, and a System module rendered from the automation catalog.

  • No build step, no framework: one static shell and native ES modules under a self-only CSP
  • Cloudflare Access, OIDC with PKCE, an allowlist in code and CSRF on every write
  • Every screen verified in light, dark and mobile with a Playwright harness
FastAPI • vanilla JS • SQLite • Cloudflare Access

The whole Azure estate as code – Terraform and Bicep provisioning, GitHub Actions pipelines, Entra ID and Intune policy as code, secured zero-trust from endpoint to edge.

Experience

The road here

Dec 2025 – present

DevOps Engineer

Solar installation company

Own the Azure estate end to end – provisioned with Terraform and Bicep, shipped through GitHub Actions – and run identity and endpoint security as code: Entra ID, Intune, LAPS, Essential Eight. Built the Job Adding System that runs the back office, 55 automations across 15 platforms, and RenewCompare, the company's internal energy-analysis tool. Documented both for handover.

Jul 2022 – Dec 2025

Administration Manager

Solar installation company

Ran the back office for a high-volume solar installer – then taught myself Python in 2025 and automated the role out of existence. What began as Excel macros became a suite of scheduled tools running unattended, and led directly into the DevOps role.

Oct 2024 – Dec 2025

Reporter

Sydney community radio

Researched, wrote and voiced news bulletins – a sideline that keeps the writing sharp and the mic comfortable.

Mar 2021 – Apr 2022

Lead Generator – door-to-door solar

Solar installation company

Where it began: on doorsteps, working to daily targets. Opening cold conversations, handling objections and earning trust quickly – learning the product, the customers and the business from the ground up.
